Estonia – Tourism in Tallinn

Tallinn, Estonia
Tallinn, Estonia

Tallinn is a very touristic city. Especially in summer there are crowds of visitors almost everywhere in the old town, and lots of museums, galleries and also hotels, restaurants or souvenir shops are opened for them. I hope that Tallinn will not lose its charm because of that…

__________________________________________________________

Estonia – Tallinn

Tallinn, Estonia
Tallinn, Estonia

Tallinn is the capital and largest city of Estonia with over 400,000 citizens.
It’s a bit difficult to determine the beginning of Tallinn’s history.
The earliest human settlements are probably over 5,000 years old, but Tallinn city was founded in the 13th century. There was also a period when the city was called Reval.

Tallinn, definitely, is the most beautiful Estonian city!
I was enjoying every single minute I spent in Tallinn, well, in its old town.
And I’m sure that everyone who visited Tallinn confirms that it’s beautiful! 🙂

__________________________________________________________

Estonia – Lenin in Narva

Narva, Estonia
Narva, Estonia

I guess, I’m not the only one who was surprised by seeing a statue of Lenin at the Narva Castle in Estonia. Well, the statue is quite hidden, but it’s still there.
I heard that this statue was kept because soviet occupation is a part of the Estonian history.

__________________________________________________________

Estonia – Narva – “Soviet memories”

Narva, Estonia
Narva, Estonia

I already mentioned before that because of the Soviet occupation some years ago, there are many Russians living in Estonia (about 25% of the total population). In regions nearby Russian boarder, e.g. in Narva, there are even about 94% of Russian-speakers (originating from Russia, Belarus and Ukraine), and many of them don’t speak Estonian at all!

__________________________________________________________

Estonia – nearby Narva – Ivangorod Fortress

Ivangorod Fortress
Ivangorod Fortress

This impressive fortress is not exactly in Narva (Estonia), but just across the river, in Russia.
It’s possible to get there only if you have a Russian visa, but from Narva you can enjoy its view.

This fortress was founded by Ivan III (in 1492), so it’s called Ivangorod Fortress.

__________________________________________________________

Ten piękny “budynek” został założony w 1492 roku przez Iwana III, i stąd też nazwa “Ivangorod Fortress”.

Estonia – Narva Castle

Narva Castle, Estonia
Narva Castle, Estonia

I think the biggest attraction of Narva is Narva Castle (called also Hermann Castle, Hermannsfeste, Herman Castle or Narva fortress).

The castle was founded in 1256 by the Danish. Since that time Narva Castle belonged to Danes, Germans, Swedes, Russians and Estonians.
The castle was damaged during the World War II and it’s not completely restored yet.

__________________________________________________________

Z racji burzliwej historii Estonii, zamek swego czasu należał do Duńczyków, Niemców, Szwedów, Rosjan i oczywiście Estończyków.
Zamek został znacząco zniszczony podczas drugiej wojny światowej, a prace nad jego odrestaurowaniem ciągle trwają.

Estonia – Narva

Narva Castle, Estonia
Narva Castle, Estonia

Narva is the third largest city in Estonia, however by walking around it’s easy to get an impression that Narva is a small Russian town… Narva is located at the Russian border, so no wonder that Russian language is heard almost everywhere in the town.

The name of Narva has an interesting origin. Have you heard about so-called Narva culture? It’s a very old culture dating back to around 5th millennium BC. And here archeologists found traces of Narva culture thus the city was named Narva.

__________________________________________________________

Estonia – Tartu’s attractions

Cathedral ruins in Tartu, Estonia
Cathedral ruins in Tartu, Estonia

I showed you already 3 pictures from Tartu, mentioned that’s a very nice city, but didn’t say what are actually its attractions. From the pictures you can guess there are interesting old buildings together with wooden houses, churches (especially ruins of a Cathedral), sculptures, and the University of Tartu.

My recommendation – just take a walk in Tartu and you’ll find many nice places. 🙂

__________________________________________________________

Estonia – University town of Tartu

Statue of writers: Oscar Wilde and Eduard Vilde, Tartu, Estonia

In each country, there are cities that we can call as ” *something* capital of a given country”.
The same in Estonia, Parnu is Estonia’s summer capital and Tartu is the intellectual capital of Estonia.

The main reason for this nice name is the oldest Estonian university in Tartu. The University of Tartu was established by the Swedish king Gustav II Adolf in 1632.
What’s interesting, in 1919, university courses were first taught in the Estonian language.

__________________________________________________________

Estonia – Tartu

Tartu, Estonia
Tartu, Estonia

Tartu is the second largest city of Estonia, after Tallinn, and it’s located almost 200 kilometers southeast of Tallinn.

I have to say, I fell in love with Tallinn (I’ll talk more about it later 🙂 ), but Tartu is also a very charming place. When you go to Estonia visit the capital but don’t forget about Tartu! 🙂

More about Tartu tomorrow. 🙂

__________________________________________________________

Jutro więcej o Tartu.

Estonia – Summer Capital Parnu

Parnu, Estonia
Parnu, Estonia

As I said before, Pärnu is Estonian resort and also known as Estonia’s Summer Capital.
You can enjoy there long, white sandy beaches and shallow waters or relax in a spa. 🙂

__________________________________________________________

Estonia – Historical City Parnu

Parnu, Estonia
Parnu, Estonia

Pärnu is the 4th biggest city in Estonia, however I think you can easily explore it on foot.

In Pärnu you will find beautiful wooden villas (yesterday picture), old town with buildings even from Medieval times and interesting churches.

__________________________________________________________

Parnu, Estonia
Parnu, Estonia

Pärnu is the best known Estonian resort and a harbor city. Apparently it’s the warmest place in Estonia and hosts many tourists in summer.

The other seasons are less popular for tourists but there are always many students in Pärnu because it’s also a university city.

There is one more adjective that can describe Pärnu – it’s also a historical city with very interesting architecture.

__________________________________________________________

Estonia – Jagala Waterfalls

Jagala Waterfalls, Estonia
Jagala Waterfalls, Estonia

The Jägala Waterfall is the largest natural waterfall in Estonia.
It’s about 8 meters high and 50 meters wide.

The Jägala Waterfall is located not so far from Tallinn so you can easily get there by car or by bus.

__________________________________________________________

Wodospad Jägala to największy wodospad w Estonii; jego wysokość to 8m, a szerokość 50m.
Wodospad Jägala znajduje się względnie blisko Tallinna, więc łatwo można się tam dostać autobusem albo samochodem.

Estonia – Tourism

Tallinn, Estonia
Tallinn, Estonia

According to Wikivoyage and Statistics Estonia (http://www.stat.ee/en), in 2015, there were about 6 million foreign visitors in Estonia. So Estonia has to have some attractions. 😉

I believe that almost everyone who visits Estonia goes to Tallinn. And there is a good reason for it! Even in my personal ranking of Estonian attractions, the medieval city of Tallinn is on number 1. I’ll tell you more about Tallinn a bit later; tomorrow and the following days, I’ll show you other nice places in Estonia.
Unfortunately, I didn’t have so much time to explore beautiful nature in Estonia, so maybe next time…

__________________________________________________________

Estonia – IT (information technology)

Tallinn, Estonia
Tallinn, Estonia

Estonia has a strong information technology sector (IT).
Did you know that Skype was written by Estonian developers?

Today, only this short information and a picture that somehow fits – at the end there is a smartphone in it… 😉

__________________________________________________________

Estonia ma rewelacyjnie rozwinięty sektor technologii informacyjnej (IT).
Czy wiedzieliście, że np. Skype jest dziełem Estończyków?

Dzisiaj tylko taka krótka informacja i zdjęcie, które musiałam pokazać 😀 i troszeczkę pasuje do IT, gdyż widzicie na nim m.in. telefon, choć pewnie to nie on przyciąga uwagę… 😉

Estonia – Religion

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Tallinn, Estonia
Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Tallinn, Estonia

Estonia, according to Wikipedia, is one of the “least religious” countries in world in terms of declared attitudes.
However, you will still find different churches in Estonia that originate from different historical periods.

In a picture – orthodox cathedral (Alexander Nevsky Cathedral) in Tallinn.

__________________________________________________________

Mimo to, w Estonii zobaczycie wiele świątyń pochodzących z różnych okresów historycznych.

Zdjęcie przedstawia Sobór św. Aleksandra Newskiego w Tallinnie.

Estonia – Citizens

Narva, Estonia
Narva, Estonia

Ethnic Estonians are Finnic people or the Baltic Finns.
Before World War II, there were almost 90% of them living in Estonia. But later, because of the Soviet occupation and its idea to russify Estonia, the population of Estonian decreased. These days, there are around 70% of Estonians and 25% of Russians (plus other minorities) living in Estonia. Especially, nearby the Russian boarder, you can meet many Russians who even don’t speak Estonian.

__________________________________________________________

Estończycy to naród bałtycko-fiński zamieszkujący Estonię.
Przed drugą wojną światową Estończycy stanowili około 90% ludności Estonii. Jednak w kolejnych latach populacja Estończyków znacznie zmalała. Było to związane z sowiecką okupacją i rusyfikacją Estonii. Po odzyskaniu niepodległości sytuacja się trochę poprawiła i obecnie Estończycy stanowią 70% całej populacji Estonii, a Rosjanie 25%. Rosjanie zamieszkują głownie rejony w pobliżu estońsko-rosyjskiej granicy i większość z nich nie zna zupełnie języka estońskiego!

Estonia – Language

Tallinn, Estonia
Tallinn, Estonia

Estonian is the official language of Estonia. It’s very similar to Finnish and may sound (and look) strange for people who are not familiar with this group of languages. 😉 But don’t worry, usually, Estonian speak English well so it’s not a problem for tourists to communicate. To be more precise, people, especially elderly, who live nearby Russian boarder may speak only Russian, but younger generation speak English.

And as you see, jokes can be also find in English. 😉

__________________________________________________________

Estonia – Terrain

Narva, Estonia
Narva, Estonia

Estonia is rather a flat country, with some hills (the highest point is 318 m above sea level), lots of forest, and of course water. Considering that Estonia is a small country, it sounds impressive to know there are over 1,500 islands and islets!

p.s. This beautiful “white tree” I found in Narva.

__________________________________________________________

W krajobrazie Estonii zdecydowanie dominują lasy i woda. Dość imponująco brzmi liczba wysp i wysepek należących do Estonii – ponad 1500!

p.s. To “białe drzewo” znalazłam w mieście Narwa.
