Cyrene was an ancient Greek city (later Roman), currently located nearby city Shahhat.
Cyrene is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Sabratha is a wonderful ancient archeological site, also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
It’s located about 70 km from Tripoli.

Leptis Magna was considered as one of the most beautiful cities of the Roman Empire.
I’m not surprised by it! 🙂

Leptis Magna is the name of the largest Roman Ruins in Libya.

From Tripoli, is relatively nearby to some great Libyan tourist attractions, e.g., Leptis Magna (130 km) or Sabratha.

When you’re visiting Libya, Tripoli is definitely a place you also want to go. Explore the medina, visit museums and mosques.

Tripoli is the capital and the largest city in Libya.

Libya is one of the Mediterranean Countries, with nice coast.

About 90% of the total area of Libya is covered by a desert (Sahara Desert).

When I was in Libya, I was impressed by the way all ancient places looked like, they were in a quite good shape. Moreover, you could just walk on all mosaics!
I felt a bit like “oh, but I don’t want to step on it, I don’t want to destroy it”.

Libya has a very, very long history, and some archaeological findings date back to 8000 BC!

If you love ruins (I do! 🙂 ) then Libya is for you!
You can find amazing places in Libya. Unfortunately, some of them, should had looked better these days…

I went to Libya driven by curiosity to see amazing ancient Roman and Greek ruins (i.e., Leptis Magna, Cyrene, Sabratha).
And I wasn’t disappointed, they’re fantastic!

Actually, Libya is not only one of the largest countries in Africa, it’s also in the first 20 of the largest countries in the world.

Libya is one of the largest countries in Africa with one of the lowest density population (in Africa).

Obtaining a visa to Libya may be quite difficult, because some embassies are temporarily closed.
If you’r planning to go as a media representative etc., it’s possible, but doesn’t mean it’s safe.

When I was in Libya, it was a relatively safe country, with some restrictions, but still, as a tourist you didn’t have to worry so much.

These days, it’s a totally different story.
Everything may happen…
Moreover, roads, airports, tour companies, etc. are temporary closed.

At that moment authorities of almost each country, advise against traveling to Libya.
Unfortunately, they have good reasons to do so…

I will not talk about the political situation in Libya, war, etc., because it’s a travel blog, I’ll mention a few facts hoping that one day the situation will be stable and the country will be safe to tourists.

I visited Libya in 2004, so it’s already 14 years ago! That’s a lot, especially for Libya, because its recent history is so intense and there are many changes. Definitely, Libya was quite a different country 14 years ago…
I remember, before I went to Libya, I wasn’t sure should I go to Syria or Libya; at the end I chose Libya. I haven’t visited Syria yet. Now, I regret that I didn’t visit both countries that time…
