Falkland Islands – Magellanic penguin

Magellanic penguin
Magellanic penguin

And another kind of penguins, Magellanic. They are probably the most common and the shyest penguins in the Falklands. In contrast to the other penguins that I introduced you before, Magellanics live underground in their burrows. Because of that, they may have fleas. Or maybe it’s just a story for tourists who want to hug them. čśë

I kolejny rodzaj pingwina – pingwin magella┼äski. W przeciwie┼ästwie do pozosta┼éych pingwin├│w, kt├│re wcze┼Ťniej przedstawia┼éam, pingwiny magella┼äskie mieszkaj─ů w norach. Z tego powodu ┼éatwiej im z┼éapa─ç pch┼éy. A mo┼╝e opowie┼Ťci o pch┼éach maj─ů tylko odstraszy─ç turyst├│w kt├│rzy chc─ů przytuli─ç pingwina. čśë

I met these horses on Pebble Island, I guess it’s my favorite island. They looked at us for a while and then slowly moved away.

Falkland Islands – Against the wind

Against the wind
Against the wind  (Saunders Island)

Why do so cute animals live in such a cold and windy place?
My first day on the Falkland was lovely, sunny, warm, people were wearing T-shirts. I got the impression it’s a normal weather there. Well,ÔÇŽ everyone is sometimes naive. čśë Summer can be also extremely cold, windy and rainy. Sometimes, I was wearing many layers of underwear, sweaters, wind-stopper, and waterproof clothes, and still freezing and missing a bit of sunshine.

Dlaczego takie urocze zwierzaki zamieszkuj─ů tak zimne i wietrzne miejsca?
M├│j pierwszy dzie┼ä┬ána Falklandach by┼é przepi─Ökny, ciep┼éo, s┼éonecznie, ludzie ubrani w koszulki z kr├│tkim r─Ökawkiem.

Falkland Islands – Of gentoo eggs and chicks

Gentoo family
Gentoo family  (Bleaker Island)

Kings have only 1 chick. Gentoo, rockhoppers and Magellanic can have two chicks. Some time ago on the Falklands, people collected and ate gentoo eggs – both nowadays still possible if you have been granted a special permission. But itÔÇÖs not allowed to take any egg! Apparently, the first egg of a gentoo is slightly smaller, and a chick from this egg may be weaker. When you take away this first small egg just after it was laid, the penguin may lay another egg, and as a result they have two eggs of the same size. If you are curios, I heard that penguin’s eggs taste like other eggs, they are not fishy.

Pingwin kr├│lewski sk┼éada tylko 1 jajko, a pingwin skalny, magella┼äski i bia┼éobrewy mog─ů z┼éo┼╝y─ç 2 jajka i wychowa─ç dwa pisklaki.

I always smile when I see penguins, especially baby penguins. Personally, I think that chicks of gentoo and emperor are the most charming. Today, 2 cute baby gentoo observing “the world”; always close to their mommy’s tummy.

Zawsze si─Ö u┼Ťmiecham widz─ůc pingwiny, szczeg├│lnie gdy maj─ů m┼éode. Osobi┼Ťcie uwa┼╝am, ┼╝e pisklaki pingwina bia┼éobrewego i cesarskiego s─ů najbardziej urocze.

Pingwin bia┼éobrewy by┼é moim ulubionym gatunkiem pingwina. No i oczywi┼Ťcie Linux… čśë

Falkland Islands – Oystercatcher

Oystercatchers
Oystercatcher

Oystercatcher is one of my favorite flying birds, especially Eurasian oystercatcher that I’ve often met in the Netherlands. On the Falklands, there are two kinds of oystercatchers: Magellanic (see today’s picture) and black oystercatcher (completely black).

Ostrygojady to jedne z moich ulubionych lataj─ůcych ptak├│w, szczeg├│lnie ostrygojad zwyczajny, kt├│rego cz─Östo spotyka┼éam w Holandii. Na Falklandach mo┼╝na spotka─ç dwa rodzaje: jak te na zdj─Öciu podobne do zwyczajnego i kompletnie czarny ostrygojad.

Falkland Islands – Lichens

Lichens
Lichens  (Saunders Island)

One day on a tiny island, I was sharing a house with a British couple, and they were fascinated about plants. They told me a lot about lichens, and showed many pictures; so the next day I was hiking, there are some hills on the Falklands (really!), and was enjoying the colorful lichens that I found. čÖé

Na jednej z wysepek na Falklandach spa┼éam w malutkim domku, razem z par─ů Brytyjczyk├│w. Oboje byli zafascynowani ilo┼Ťci─ů ro┼Ťlin jakie znale┼║li na wyspie; opowiadali du┼╝o o porostach i pokazywali mi zdj─Öcia. Nast─Öpnego dnia chodz─ůc po g├│rkach, opr├│cz podziwiania widok├│w i zwierzak├│w zachwyca┼éam si─Ö kolorowymi porostami, kt├│rych formacje przybiera┼éy dziwne kszta┼éty.
