Turkey – Final impression

Pomegranate, Turkey
Pomegranate, Turkey

The last day of March brings us to the last post about Turkey.
My traditional question – how did you like it?
What’s your favorite place in Turkey? Or maybe, I missed something important?

Today, I also want to mention two more things. First, when you’re in Turkey eat lots of fruits. When we’re there in December, in many places people were selling oranges. We saw trees full of oranges, mandarins, grapefruits, pomegranates, khaki etc. Colorful, delicious and healthy!

So to keep balance, I also have to mention something unhealthy, however it maybe the case only in winter… The smog level in many places in Turkey was extremely high, well, much too high than it’s considered as healthy in Europe. So air pollution is really a problem there, so if you have asthma etc., better don’t go to Turkey in winter. When we came back home, we checked air pollution in different places around the world, and actually Turkey was worse than Beijing! (Here you can compare air pollution in different countries: http://aqicn.org) So just to be aware, it may be not the best holiday-place for everyone…

Tradycyjnie, ostatni dzie艅 miesi膮ca ko艅czy kolejn膮 seri臋 post贸w, w marcu to by艂a Turcja.
I jak zawsze jestem ciekawa Waszych wra偶e艅?
Macie swoje ulubione miejsce w Turcji?

Dzisiaj jeszcze chcia艂am wspomnie膰 o dw贸ch rzeczach, kt贸re utkwi艂y nam w pami臋ci po odwiedzeniu Turcji. Pierwsz膮 z nich s膮 owoce. 馃檪 Przynajmniej w grudniu, drzewa s膮 bogato obsypane pomara艅czami, mandarynkami, grejpfrutami, granatami, itp. Nic, tylko kupowa膰 艣wie偶e owoce i si臋 nimi zajada膰!

A dla zachowania r贸wnowagi, teraz b臋dzie aspekt niezdrowy. Ot贸偶, b臋d膮c w Turcji w grudniu, zaskoczy艂 nas poziom smogu. Jest niesamowicie wysoki, znacznie wy偶szy ni偶 w s艂ynnym Pekinie! Je偶eli chcecie por贸wna膰 zanieczyszczenie powietrza w r贸偶nych miejscach, polecam stronk臋 http://aqicn.org – jest te偶 wersja polskoj臋zyczna.

Turkey – Aphrodisias

Aphrodisias, Turkey
Aphrodisias, Turkey

Aphrodisias is another ancient site in Turkey and maybe it’s even my favorite one. It’s a bit far from other attractions, and it’s not really famous, neither crowded. But it’s one of the most impressive sites! Even in Wikipedia you find information that “As an archaeological site, it contains some of the most impressive Roman ruins in Turkey, and has perhaps offers a greater value than Ephesus.” And I totally agree! We’re really surprised how big Aphrodisias is and how many buildings, columns are still so well preserved! I can just highly recommend you to go there when you’re in Turkey! And enjoy ancient world!

__________________________________________________________

Afrodyzja to kolejne staro偶ytne miasto znajduj膮ce si臋 na terenie Turcji. Pozostaje mi tylko Was bardzo zach臋ci膰 do odwiedzenia Afrodyzji.

Turkey – Owl in Laodikya

Owl in Laodikya, Turkey
Owl in Laodikya, Turkey

Laodikya brought us one more cute surprise – we saw there an owl sitting on ancient column. Maybe some noise woke it up, because the owl was slowly opening its eyes and looking around what’s going on. Owl was sitting high enough so nobody could bother it and we’re really enjoying it’s views.

__________________________________________________________

W pewnym momencie sowa si臋 obudzi艂a i z zaciekawieniem obraca艂a g艂ow臋 we wszystkie strony, a my baczni si臋 jej przygl膮dali艣my.

Turkey – Laodikya

Laodikya, Turkey

Laodikya is one the ancient sites we visited and it really surprised us. It’s not very famous, but very beautiful! When I was planning our trip, Laodikya was on our way from Pamukkale, we decided to stop there, but didn’t have too much expectations like e.g., with Ephesus. And we’re nicely surprised, the site is really worth visiting. And it’s not crowded at all.

__________________________________________________________

Laodikya to kolejne staro偶ytne miasto, kt贸re odwiedzili艣my b臋d膮c w Turcji, i kt贸re r贸wnie偶 nas mi艂o zaskoczy艂o.
Laodikya znajduje si臋 w pobli偶u Pamukkale, wi臋c zajrzycie tam przy okazji odwiedzania s艂ynnych taras贸w!

Turkey – Akyaka

Akyaka, Turkey
Akyaka, Turkey

Akyaka may not be the typical touristic destination, but when you travel along the coast, e.g., from Izmir to Antalya, you’ll find on your way many nice places such as Akyaka.
We stayed in Akyaka by accident. We’re searching for a nice place, surrounded by nature, close to the sea, and about 25 km north of Marmaris. Our goal was to visit some islands by ferry (i.e., Rhodes). There are ferries from Marmaris, but Marmaris seemed too crowded to us. And Akyaka was a perfect location. It has a history going back to over 400 BC, rock-cut tombs, and houses and hotels of very distinct architecture (e.g., wooden balconies with lovely handcrafted decorations).

We stayed in the Tatil Apart Hotel which is located by a lovely river and many wild geese. The Tatil Apart Hotels offers nice apartments for bigger parties. The kitchens of these apartments have everything you need for self-catering stay.
Driving up the nearby mountain road gives you perfect view points over the valley watching sunsets. For lovely sunrises we just had to step outside our hotel.

__________________________________________________________

Szukali艣my spokojnego miejsca w bliskiej odleg艂o艣ci od Marmaris. Chcieli艣my wybra膰 si臋 na Rodos, a z Marmaris odp艂ywaj膮 promy. Marmaris wyda艂o nam si臋 zbyt zat艂oczone, wi臋c wyb贸r pad艂 na Akyaka.
Nocleg sp臋dzili艣my w Tatil Apart Hotel, kt贸ry oferuje wygodne pokoje/apartamenty z kuchni膮. Dodatkowo, 偶ona w艂a艣ciciela jest Polk膮! I to pewnie jeden z nielicznych hoteli w Turcji, kt贸ry posiada polsk膮 wersj臋 strony internetowej.

Turkey – Tombs in Kaunos

Tombs in Kaunos, Turkey
Tombs in Kaunos, Turkey

Kaunos is famous from its ancient site, however there is one more attraction. Just on the short way to Kaunos, you’ll see amazing tombs cut from rocks. While planning my trip, I was watching pictures of these tombs and really wanted to see them in real. I found many different coordinates, and got a bit confused where they are. But it’s actually very easy to find them! When you take a ferry from Dalyan, you’ll see tombs on your right while walking to Kaunos. If you go to Kaunos by car, just walk or drive to the ferry place, and you’ll easily find them.
Maybe someone’ll say that rocks are destroyed, but still they’re really impressive, especially when you start thinking how difficult it was to build them.

__________________________________________________________

Mo偶e znajdzie si臋 kto艣, kto powie, 偶e w ten spos贸b ska艂y zosta艂y zniszczone, jednak te grobowce robi膮 wra偶enie!

Turkey – Squirrel

Squirrel in Kaunos, Turkey
Squirrel in Kaunos, Turkey

Kaunos covers actually quite a big area. Besides ruins, we saw also nice animals, like a donkey (yesterday photo) or squirrel (today’s picture). It was quite easy to spot both of them, since their colors are much different from the colors of stones. Donkeys were very friendly, and happy when we pet them. Squirrels like squirrels, don’t spend so much time in a one place, fortunately I managed to take a picture of one of them.

__________________________________________________________

Kaunos zajmuje bardzo du偶膮 powierzchni臋 i mo偶na tam sp臋dzi膰 wiele godzin, spaceruj膮c i “odkrywaj膮c” kolejne ruiny. Co wi臋cej, w Kaunos spotkacie te偶 r贸偶ne zwierzaki.

Turkey – Kaunos

Donkey in Kaunos, Turkey
Donkey in Kaunos, Turkey

Kaunos is another ancient site we visited in December. I think it’s quite famous, however it may be a challenge to get there. You can drive there along the lake K枚yce臒iz (yesterday’s post). Or you can take a small ferry (only for passengers) from Dalyan and then walk to the ruins. Both ways are charming, but it’s not possible to combine them, so if you want to go there by car, you also have to drive back. If you want to take a boat, you have to walk, then walk back and take a ferry back to the town Dalyan.

__________________________________________________________

Kaunos to kolejne staro偶ytne miasto, kt贸re zwiedzili艣my w grudniu. Wydaje mi si臋, 偶e miejsce jest do艣膰 znane, jednak wyprawa do Kaunos mo偶e by膰 przygod膮. 馃槈 Do ruin Kaunos mo偶na dojecha膰 samochodem, wzd艂u偶 jeziora K枚yce臒iz (wczorajszy post) albo przyp艂yn膮膰 艂贸dk膮 z miasta Dalyan, a nast臋pnie przespacerowa膰 si臋. Obie trasy s膮 urokliwe, jednak nie mo偶na ich po艂膮czy膰. Je偶eli zdecydujecie si臋 na samoch贸d, trzeba tak偶e wr贸ci膰 t膮 sam膮 drog膮. Je偶eli pop艂yniecie z Dalyan, trzeba i艣膰 pieszo do Kaunos (oko艂o 2km), wr贸ci膰 pieszo i zn贸w pop艂yn膮膰.

Turkey – Lake K枚yce臒iz

Lake K枚yce臒iz, Turkey
Lake K枚yce臒iz, Turkey

One early morning we’re driving to see the ancient ruins of Kaunos and then we had a short break by the Lake K枚yce臒iz. Maybe it’s just one of these “nothing special” places, but shortly after sunrise nature’s beauty always impresses us. And nature in Turkey is also stunning.
I still think, that Turkey for many is just sea and beach, plus Istanbul or Pamukkale, Cappadocia… I loved all ancient sites, but nature with mountains etc. is amazing as well, and I’m sure while visiting turkey you can easily find many hidden gems!

__________________________________________________________

Wczesnym porankiem wybrali艣my si臋 do Kaunos aby zwiedza膰 ruiny tego staro偶ytnego miasta. Mo偶e to jedno z tych 鈥瀦wyczajnych鈥 miejsc, jednak natura obserwowana tu偶 po wschodzie s艂o艅ca zawsze zachwyca.
Wydaje mi si臋, 偶e dla wielu Turcja to synonim pla偶y i morza.

Turkey – Becin Castle

Becin Castle, Turkey
Becin Castle, Turkey

The Becin Castle we found and visited by accident. While driving from Bodrum to Marmaris, we found information about a castle nearby Milas, and since we have some time, we decided to check it out. And it was a very nice discovery! The castle covers quite a big area. You may call it just a huge ruin, but it’s a great place for a short break.

__________________________________________________________

Zamek Becin nie by艂 w naszych planach. Natrafili艣my na niego jad膮c z Bodrum do Marmaris.

Turkey – Bodrum

Bodrum, Turkey
Bodrum, Turkey

Bodrum is not only a home of the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, it also a lovely town with many attractions. There is a nice Castle of St. Peter, the Theatre of Halicarnassus, or windmills located on the hill. Today’s picture was taken just nearby windmills, and you can see the town with surrounded mountains.

We loved sightseeing Bodrum, thus I’d like to recommend to you the nice Asmin Hotel Bodrum. It’s located in the city center and within a short walking distance to almost all attractions. Although in the city center is a calm oasis, the rooms are fantastic and the breakfast of the richest, local varieties (try all the cheese species, my favorite was 脟e莽il peynir 馃檪 ). If you can spare some time (as we recommend to do) have a chat with the owner and the staff. They give you valuable insights of Bodrum and Turkey.

__________________________________________________________

Znajdziecie tam wiele atrakcji, przede wszystkim Mauzoleum, zamek, staro偶ytny teatr, wiatraki oraz wiele innych. Dzisiejsze zdj臋cie zosta艂o zrobione tu偶 obok wiatrak贸w, to dobry punkt widokowy na miasto.

Hotel znajduje si臋 w spokojnym zak膮tku starego miasta, wiec w idealnej odleg艂o艣ci na piesze zwiedzanie wielu atrakcji Bodrum. Dodatkowo 艣niadanie hotelowe jest pyszne i oferuje du偶y wyb贸r lokalnych smako艂yk贸w, np. ser贸w – osobi艣cie polecam pyszny 脟e莽il peynir.

Turkey – Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, Bodrum

Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, Bodrum
Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, Bodrum

Yesterday, I told you a bit about the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and that we visited the site were the Temple of Artemis was standing. Our next wonder was The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus (Tomb of Mausolus) that is located now in Bodrum. This site looks much better! Well, there are only ruins, but there are also information about the site as well as a model of the mausoleum that helps to imagine how it looked like.

During that trip, we also “saw” the Colossus of Rhodes, however it’s not Turkey, so I’ll keep this information for a month about Greece. I’ll just add, that from Turkey it’s very convenient to visit some of Greek islands.

One more thing about the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus. It’s in the old city of Bodrum, so you can easily go there on foot, but be aware, there are many stray dogs in Bodrum. During the day dogs are calm and just sleep on the streets, but from evening until early morning they run, bark and may be aggressive, especially when they’re in groups.

__________________________________________________________

Wczoraj wspomnia艂am o 7 cudach 艣wiata, oraz 偶e odwiedzili艣my miejsce gdzie znajdowa艂a si臋 艢wi膮tynia Artemidy w Efezie. Dzisiaj, kilka s艂贸w o Mauzoleum w Halikarnasie, kt贸re obecnie znajduje si臋 w Bodrum. S膮 ruiny, jest du偶o informacji, rysunki i nawet makieta. Tak powinny by膰 zaprezentowane wszystkie “cuda”.

Nasz trzeci z cud贸w 艣wiata, jaki odwiedzili艣my podczas ostatniej wycieczki po Turcji, to Kolos Rodyjski. To miejsce oczywi艣cie nale偶y do terytorium Grecji, wi臋c szczeg贸艂y zostawi臋 na miesi膮c o Grecji.

Jeszcze wracaj膮c do Mauzoleum w Bodrum, znajduje si臋 ono w starym mie艣cie i bez problemu mo偶na si臋 tam przespacerowa膰.

Turkey – Seven Wonders of the Ancient World

Temple of Artemis, Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, Turkey
Temple of Artemis, Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, Turkey

Have you heard about the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World?
They are: Great Pyramid of Giza, Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Temple of Artemis, Statue of Zeus at Olympia, Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, Colossus of Rhodes, and the Lighthouse of Alexandria.

I remember, when I was a child, I had a book about these wonders and I was often thinking to visit them one day. I didn’t understand that many of them don’t exist any more.

During our last trip to Turkey, we wanted to visit 3 of these sites, see ruins or just the place where they’re possibly standing. First, we went to the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus. In today’s picture you see that almost nothing left out of it. Unfortunately, there was not so much information about the temple. It would be great to see at least how big the temple was etc., at the end it’s not so difficult to put some marks. Unfortunately, this wonder is almost forgotten…

__________________________________________________________

Znacie siedem cud贸w 艣wiata (staro偶ytnego)?
Kiedy by艂am ma艂a, mia艂am ksi膮偶k臋 pt. “7 cud贸w 艣wiata” i cz臋sto j膮 przegl膮da艂am z nadziej膮 zobaczenia wszystkich, kiedy艣, w przysz艂o艣ci…

Do siedmiu cud贸w 艣wiata nale偶膮: Piramida Cheopsa, Wisz膮ce ogrody Semiramidy w Babilonie, 艢wi膮tynia Artemidy w Efezie, Pos膮g Zeusa w Olimpii, Mauzoleum w Halikarnasie, Kolos Rodyjski i Latarnia morska w Faros.

Podczas naszej ostatniej wizyty w Turcji, chcieli艣my zobaczy膰 miejsca, gdzie znajdowa艂y si臋 trzy z siedmiu cud贸w 艣wiata. Zacz臋li艣my od 艢wi膮tyni Artemidy. Wystarczy艂oby zaznaczy膰 gdzie 艣wi膮tynia si臋 znajdowa艂a, postawi膰 tabliczk臋 z obrazem i kr贸tkim opisem, i to by zupe艂nie wystarczy艂o aby odnie艣膰 pozytywne wra偶enie. Mo偶e kiedy艣 co艣 si臋 zmieni…

Turkey – Cats in Ephesus

Cat in Ephesus, Turkey
Cat in Ephesus, Turkey

Also in ancient sites you’ll see many dogs and cats.
There are actually so many cats in Ephesus and there was even written a book “Cats of Ephesus”!
This cute cat was posing very well, and almost looked like saying “Call me, if you need help”.

__________________________________________________________

“Koty w Efez”.
A ten kociak ze zdj臋cia bardzo 艂adnie mi pozowa艂, a wr臋cz zdawa艂 si臋 m贸wi膰 “w razie potrzeby, zadzwo艅”.

Turkey – Ephesus

The Library of Celsus, Ephesus, Turkey
The Library of Celsus, Ephesus, Turkey

Ephesus, an ancient Greek city, is one of the most famous ancient sites in Turkey. It’s very big and also very impressive, so no wonder it’s also one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. My favorite are ruins of The Library of Celsus, but you’ll find here many stunning ruins!

__________________________________________________________

Efez, to staro偶ytne greckie miasto, kt贸re jest jedn膮 z najpopularniejszych staro偶ytnych atrakcji w Turcji. W 2015 roku miejsce zosta艂o wpisane na List臋 艢wiatowego Dziedzictwa UNESCO.
Efez zajmuje bardzo du偶膮 powierzchni臋 i znajdziecie tam wiele wspania艂ych zabytk贸w.

Turkey – Cats in Alacati

Cat in Turkey, Alacati
Cat in Turkey, Alacati

In many places in Turkey, we saw stray dogs and cats. None of them looks skinny and poor, so I guess they have their tricks to get some food. We saw also a cat eating bread (in today’s picture). It’s not the best cats food, but maybe this one got used to it…
Later, in Alacati, we saw a few fishermen. They’re surrounded by big group of cats that were begging for fish. Cats were patient enough and got fresh fish leftovers.

__________________________________________________________

W wielu miejscach w Turcji, spotkali艣my bezdomne psy i koty. Jednak, 偶aden zwierzak nie wygl膮da艂 na wyg艂odzonego, wi臋c chyba maj膮 swoje sposoby aby dosta膰 troch臋 jedzenia.
Byli otoczeni przez spor膮 grupk臋 kot贸w, i kotom zdecydowanie op艂aca艂o si臋 czeka膰.

Turkey – Windmills in Alacati

Windmills in Alacati, Turkey
Windmills in Alacati, Turkey

Ala莽at谋 is a lovely town nearby Izmir. We went there to see windmills, and it was really worthy. Even more, we discovered how charming Alacati is. Even Wikipedia says: “Alacati is one of the most authentic towns in Turkey with stone houses, narrow streets, boutique hotels…” and I couldn’t agree more! We took many pictures of beautiful houses, windmills and also met many dogs and cats.

__________________________________________________________

Ala莽at谋 to urocze miasteczko niedaleko Izmiru. Wybrali艣my si臋 tam, z nadziej膮 zobaczenia wiatrak贸w, z kt贸rych s艂ynie okolica. I bardzo szybko ucieszyli艣my si臋 z wizyty w Alacati. Wiatraki to tylko cz臋艣膰 tutejszych atrakcji. Miasteczko ma wiele uroku. Znajdziemy tam pi臋kne domki, 偶yczliwych mieszka艅c贸w oraz sympatyczne psy i koty.

Turkey – Perge

Perge, Turkey
Perge, Turkey

Perge (Perga) is also an archaeological site located nearby Antalya. It’s the last place from this province that I will mention on my blog for now. But there are many more in the vicinity of Antalya. So if you’re planning to stay a bit longer in Antalya, visit also other sites. You won’t regret!

After visiting so many ancient sites, it’s easy to get a bit confused what was what. They all look very alike, but there is always something unique amongst them. For me, I really enjoyed visiting all of them!

__________________________________________________________

Ruiny miasta Perge r贸wnie偶 znajduj膮 si臋 w niedalekiej odleg艂o艣ci od Antalya.
B臋d膮c w Turcji, zwiedzili艣my wiele podobnych staro偶ytych miast/ruin jednak w ka偶dym znalaz艂am co艣 interesuj膮cego i nigdy mnie nie znu偶y艂y.

Turkey – Aspendos

Aspendos, Turkey
Aspendos, Turkey

Aspendos it’s another amazing ancient site nearby Antalya. The Roman theatre is my favorite place here. It’s impressive and very well preserved. It’s not the only attraction of Aspendos, but trust me, when you go there, you’ll remember that theatre very well! Simply astonishing!

__________________________________________________________

Aspendos to kolejne niesamowite miejsce po艂o偶one w pobli偶u Antalya. Znajdziemy tam wiele ruin zachowanych w do艣膰 dobrym stanie, jednak mnie zn贸w najbardziej zauroczy艂 rzymski teatr.

Turkey – Side

Side, Turkey
Side, Turkey

Side is probably the most famous ancient Greek site nearby Antalya. In today’s picture, you see the nowadays iconic columns of “Side”, however there is much more to explore! Side is lovely located at the coast and it’s full of excavated ruins, often in a good shape, so you can easily spend a full day there!
On the other side, try to avoid the most touristic part of the town. At each step, someone asks you to buy or eat something… I understand it’s their job, but from my point of view it’s very annoying…

Side to prawdopodobnie najs艂ynniejsze miejsce w pobli偶u Antalya, kt贸rego historia si臋ga staro偶ytnej Grecji. Dzisiejsze zdj臋cie przedstawia bardzo charakterystyczne kolumny nad brzegiem morza w Side. Jednak Side, to nie tylko te kolumny! Bez wi臋kszego problemu mo偶na sp臋dzi膰 tam ca艂y dzie艅 zwiedzaj膮 rozmaite ruiny!
