Colombo is the largest city of Sri Lanka.
It’s the place, where tourists usually start their visit.
Colombo has many faces: a modern one, areas with colonial buildings, and Colombo is also a port city.

Sri Lanka – Capital
Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte (or Kotte) in the capital of Sri Lanka.
However, people often say that Colombo is the capital of the country.
Sri Lanka – Flag
The flag of Sri Lanka is called the “Lion Flag”, because it shows an image of a golden lion.
Of course, it has a variety meanings,
e.g., the lion symbolizes the bravery of the Sinhalese;
four leaves represent the four concepts of Buddhism;
green and orange go for Muslims and Hindus, respectively,
and the golden border stands for the unity of the nation.

Buddhism is the main religion in Sri Lanka;
there are also many believers of Hinduism, Islam and also Christianity.

Sinhala and Tamil are official languages in Sri Lanka;
English is also widely spoken.

December to March are considered to be the peak months,
however, you can visit Sri Lanka all year round.
I went to the island in August and the weather was very good.

Sri Lanka has a tropical climate, with an average temperature of about 30C;however, there are some significant differences between different parts of the island.

Sri Lanka used to be a Portuguese colony, then Dutch, and later a British one.

Ceylon is a former name of Sri Lanka.
The name comes from a colonial period but it’s still quite well known because of the tea, called “Ceylon Tea”, that’s produced in Sri lanka.
