As much as I found men clothes perfect for summer, I think that women clothes could be fine for winter… I know religion and culture, but I personally wouldn’t like to be covered by black or dark clothes in hot summer, when it’s 40 Celsius degrees (white would be fine…).

What’s interesting, the Sultan has forbidden the covering of faces in public office in Oman. Apparently, different Arabic countries have different custom.

Jak bardzo praktyczne wydają mi się męski stroje w Omanie, tak bardzo nie chciałabym nosić ichniejszych kobiecych strojów… Wiem, religia, tradycja itp., jednak w około 40 C – stopniowym upale zdecydowanie wolę się okryć (nawet kompletnie) czymś jasnym, niż ciemnym.

Co ciekawe, Sułtan zakazał zakrywania twarzy w miejscach publicznych w Omanie – każdy kraj arabski ma swoje odrębne zwyczaje…

Today, I want to show you typical men’s clothes in Oman. I found them very practical in hot summers. I saw many men wearing this kind of “white dress” (called: thawb or thobe), a white hat (2 kinds: kummah and ghutra) and sandals.

Dzisiaj chcę Wam pokazać typowy męski strój w Omanie. Osobiście wydaje mi się idealny na upalny omański klimat (strój jest przewiewny i chroni przed słońcem). Widziałam wielu mężczyzn ubranych w charakterystyczne “białe suknie”, białe nakrycie głowy i sandały.

As I said yesterday, in Oman you’ll see many different mosques. Even if you cannot or aren’t allowed to go inside, look at the mosques from outside. You’ll see many interesting details in their architecture.
When you’ve seen many mosques they may look kind of the same, however all of these tiny details make a difference. 🙂

Jak wczoraj wspomniałam, w Omanie znajdziecie ogromną ilość meczetów. Nie zawsze można je zwiedzać, jednak z zewnątrz też warto im się przyglądać. Ja zawsze zwracam uwagę na wszelkie, kolorowe zdobienia i według mnie to one nadają meczetom charakteru.

Oman is located in the southeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula, and it’s an Arab country. Islam is the main religion, but there is also a small minority of Christians or Hindus.

So no wonder you find in Oman many mosques. I very liked this white-green minaret together with rocks. Minaret literally means lighthouse, and it’s traditionally used for the Muslim call to prayer.

Oman jest położony w południowo-wschodniej części Półwyspu Arabskiego, nad Morzem Arabskim. Główną religią Omanu jest oczywiście Islam, jednak kilka procent mieszkańców wyznaje chrześcijaństwo lub hinduizm.

Nie dziwi więc nikogo ilość meczetów w Omanie. Bardzo mi się spodobał ten biało-zielony minaret na tle “rdzawych” skał. Minaret w dosłownym tłumaczeniu oznacza latarnię morską; jest to wysoka wieża, z której nawołuje się wiernych na modlitwę.

In June, I want to show you some of my pictures from Oman, or being more precisely from the Sultanate of Oman.

W czerwcu pokażę Wam kilka moich zdjęć z Omanu, a dokładniej z Sułtanatu Omanu, gdyż tak brzmi pełna nazwa tego kraju.

Spędziłam tylko kilka dni w Omanie, ale jak na pierwszą wizytę wystarczyło aby zwiedzić kilka ciekawych miejsc i poznać troszeczkę kulturę. 🙂

And today, the last picture from Germany; it was taken in a lovely village in Bavaria.
This month, I didn’t mention many beautiful places (e.g., Hamburg), but Germany is full of attractions so it’ll appear later again on my blog.

Dzisiaj, już ostatnie zdjęcie z Niemiec; zostało ono zrobione w uroczym bawarskim miasteczku.
W tym miesiącu nie byłam w stanie pokazać Wam wszystkich niemieckich atrakcji, ominęłam nawet kilka dość ważnych (jak Hamburg). Jednak jestem pewna, że Niemcy pojawią się jeszcze kiedyś na moim blogu, i wtedy nadrobię zaległości.

I jak zawsze, jestem ciekawa Waszej opinii na temat Niemiec. Zgadzacie się ze mną, że często nie doceniamy uroków naszego sąsiada?

Speyer is a small town located in a state Rhineland-Palatinate. I’d say it’s a typical German town, where you can spend a lovely day. What’s interesting, Speyer was founded by the Romans, and it’s one of the oldest towns in Germany.

Spira (po niemiecku: Speyer) to miasteczko znajdujące się w stanie Nadrenia-Palatynat. Powiedziałabym, że to typowe urocze, małe, niemieckie miasto. Jako ciekawostka dodam, że Spira została założona przez Rzymian i jest jednym z najstarszych miast w Niemczech.

Bamberg is a beautiful town located also in Bavaria. Its historic city center is one of the UNESCO world heritage sites.

You can easily have a very busy day in Bamberg (or even a few days), by visiting all interesting places and exploring lovely streets. Unfortunately, when I was in Bamberg it was raining quite badly, but I still have very good memories and would like to visit Bamberg once more. 🙂

Bamberg to kolejne piękne, historyczne miasto (a raczej miasteczko) położone w Bawarii. Jego średniowieczne stare miasto w 1993 roku zostało wpisane na listę światowego dziedzictwa UNESCO.

Bamberg nie jest zbyt duży, jednak można spędzić tam co najmniej jeden intensywny dzień. Znajdziecie tam wiele ciekawych miejsc, ale dużo przyjemności sprawia także spacer po uroczych uliczkach. Niestety moja wizyta w Bambergu była krótka, z powodu intensywnego deszczu, ale jestem pewna, że kiedyś tam wrócę! 🙂

Nuremberg (German: Nürnberg) is a beautiful, historical city in Bavaria. First information about Nuremberg dates back to 1050 year. These days you’ll find there many attractions, e.g., the castle, old fortifications, Albrecht Dürer’s House, and many interesting churches, houses, museums, etc.

I had problems in choosing a good picture for today’s post. I had the impression that using “that” picture is not fair to the other one, etc. 🙂 At the end, I decided to show you a man we saw in one of the old churches. It was basically a gallery, where people were painting or drawing. Art is everywhere in Nuremberg. 🙂

Norymberga to piękne miasto o długiej historii (pierwsze wzmianki sięgają 1050 roku). Norymberga oferuje wiele atrakcji turystom m.in. zamek, obwarowania miasta, dom Albrechta Dürera, wiele ciekawych kościołów, rozmaite muzea itp.

Muszę przyznać, że miałam problem z wyborem właściwego zdjęcia do dzisiejszego postu. Miałam wrażenie, że cokolwiek wybiorę będzie to “niesprawiedliwe” w stosunku do innych atrakcji Norymbergi. 🙂 Ostatecznie zdecydowałam się na to zdjęcie (choć mało reprezentatywne) – zostało wykonane w jednym z kościołów, który został przekształcony w galerię, i mogłam tam się przypatrzeć wielu osobom malującym i rysującym. W Norymberdze sztuka jest wszędzie. 🙂

Bremen is another beautiful German city (not so far from Leer). It actually has a very long history and even some legends are connected with Bremen.

Do you know the Brothers Grimm fairytales? You’ll find different characters from their stories in some German towns. There is even so-called “German Fairytale Route”, that starts in Hanau, the birthplace of the Brothers Grimm. The route ends in Bremen and covers 600 km.

I heard that today’s picture should be recognized by all German children, because there are characters from very famous fairytale. Donkey, dog, cat and rooster were treated badly by their owners and decided to go to Bremen to become musicians. In Bremen you can find out what happened to them. 🙂

Brema (Bremen) to kolejne piękne, niemieckie miasto (całkiem blisko Leer). Brema to nie tylko miasto z ciekawą historią, ale też otoczone jest baśniami i legendami.

Czy znacie baśnie braci Grimm? Wielu baśniowych bohaterów znajdziecie w różnych niemieckich miasteczkach. Co więcej, w Niemczech jest trasa niemieckich baśni, która rozpoczyna się w Hanau, czyli w miejscu urodzin braci Grimm. Ta trasa ciągnie się przez 600 km, a kończy się w Bremie. 🙂

Słyszałam, że dzisiejsze zdjęcie powinno być rozpoznane przez wszystkie niemieckie dzieci, ponieważ przedstawia bohaterów znanej baśni. Osioł, pies, kot i kogut byli źle traktowani przez swoich właścicieli, wiec postanowili uciec do Bremy aby zostać tam muzykantami. Co spotkało zwierzaki dowiecie się w Bremie. 🙂

Leer is a small town at the northwestern Germany, just close to the Dutch boarder.
When I was living in the Netherlands, I was often passing Leer. One day, I decided to make a longer stopover and visit the town. “Leer” in German means empty, but it’s not empty at all. It’s actually a very nice town, especially charming in spring when all flowers blossom.

This visit proved me once again, that many German towns are very nice. 🙂

Leer to miasteczko w północno-zachodnich Niemczech, tuż przy granicy z Holandią.
Kiedy mieszkałam w Holandii, często przejeżdżałam przez Leer, aż któregoś dnia postanowiłam zwiedzić to miasto. Leer po niemiecku oznacza “pusty”, jednak miasto nie jest puste, a bardzo urocze. Wybrałam chyba najlepszy moment na zwiedzanie Leer, ponieważ był środek wiosny i drzewa kwitły na różowo, więc wszystko wyglądało bajecznie.

Ta wizyta po raz kolejny utwierdziła mnie w przekonaniu, że niemieckie miasteczka są piękne. 🙂

And one more picture from the Baden Württemberg state, so the same area as Tübingen, Lichtenstein Castle or Esslingen.

The Black Forest (German: Schwarzwald) is a large forested mountain range in the state of Baden-Württemberg in southwestern Germany. The highest peak is 1,493 (4,898 ft) meters above sea level, so it’s not very high. In general you’ll find in the Black Forest nice mountains and forests, both offer great hiking or cycling paths (or skiing in winter); as well as lovely villages. and you have to try there so-called Black Forest cake (Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte). 🙂

One of the hikes I did in the Black Forest ended up with a view of this nice ruins of the All Saints’ Abbey (Kloster Allerheiligen). 🙂

I jeszcze jedno zdjęcie z Badenii-Wirtembergii, czyli okolic Tübingen, Zamku Lichtenstein czy Esslingen.

Czarny Las (Schwarzwald) to masy górski rozciągający się na terenie południowo-zachodnich Niemiec. Najwyższy jego szczyt to 1493 m n.p.m. Czarny Las to piękna okolica pełna gór i gęstych lasów, oferująca duży wybór tras do pieszych wędrówek, dla rowerzystów, a także zimą dla narciarzy. Znajdziemy też tam wiele ciekawych miasteczek. I koniecznie trzeba tam spróbować tort szwarcwaldzki (Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte) 🙂

A podczas jednej z wędrówek natrafiłam na te piękne ruiny klasztoru (Kloster Allerheiligen). 🙂

Esslingen (Esslingen am Neckar) is also located nearby Stuttgart (as well as Tübingen and Lichtenstein Castle).
Esslingen is one of these small, charming German towns.
It has a beautiful old town, castle, and is surrounded by vineyards.
I like to “get lost” in towns like Esslingen; simply walk without a reason, without a map, and follow my instinct. At every corner there is something beautiful to see, so walking is just a pleasure. 🙂

Esslingen (Esslingen am Neckar) także znajduje się niedaleko Stuttgartu (podobnie jak Tübingen czy Zamek Lichtenstein).
Esslingen jest jednym z tych uroczych niemieckich miasteczek, z ciekawym starym miastem, zamkiem, a do tego otoczony jest winnicami.
Lubię w takich miejscach odłożyć mapę i po prostu podążać za moim instynktem, lub spacerować bez celu. Za każdym rogiem i tak czeka na mnie jakaś atrakcja. 🙂

Lichtenstein is not the same as Liechtenstein. 🙂 Lichtenstein is a beautiful castle located in Germany, nearby Tübingen. Liechtenstein is a tiny country bordered by Switzerland and Austria. One day, I’ll tell you more about the country, but today let’s focus on a castle.

The construction of the Lichtenstein Castle was inspired by the novel “Lichtenstein” by Wilhelm Hauff. The castle was built in the 19th century. And it’s name means “light colored stone”.

The Lichtenstein Castle is smaller and not so popular as the Neuschwanstein Castle, but I enjoyed it much more. I can only recommend you to go there. 🙂

Lichtenstein to nie to samo co Liechtenstein (jak to jedna literka może tak wiele zmienić). 🙂 Lichtenstein to piękny niemiecki zamek niedaleko Tübingen, a Liechtenstein to malutkie państwo pomiędzy Szwajcarią, a Austrią. Kiedyś opowiem Wam trochę o Liechtensteinie, ale dzisiaj będzie o zamku. 🙂

Z ciekawostek, zamek Lichtenstein powstał w XIX wieku, w wyniku inspiracji książką “Lichtenstein” autorstwa Wilhelma Hauffa.

Zamek Lichtenstein nie jest tak znany (ani tak duży) jak Neuschwanstein, jednak to nie ujmuje mu ani trochę uroku.

Tübingen is a lovely university town, located not so far from Stuttgart. I visited this colorful town in autumn. Because of reddish/yellowish leaves everything was even more beautiful and colorful!

Tübingen is a small town, but very lively. It holds many different festivals, so check before going there, maybe you’ll find something interesting.

Tübingen to urocze miasteczko uniwersyteckie. Znajduje się niedaleko Stuttgartu. Miałam okazję odwiedzić Tübingen jesienią. Wyglądało wtedy przepięknie, ponieważ samo w sobie jest bardzo kolorowe, a do tego wszelkie odcienie jesiennych liści dodawały jeszcze więcej uroku.

Tübingen skojarzył mi się z Toruniem – oba małe miasta, pełne studentów, z charakterystyczną atmosferą i goszczące rozmaite festiwale. 🙂

As you see from the title of today’s post, some German towns have quite complicated names…
Rothenburg ob der Tauber is the name of one of the most charming towns I’ve visited in Germany. However, I still have problems to memorize this name, somehow Neuschwanstein sounds easier to me. 😉
Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a town, where you want to use your camera all the time while walking around. 🙂

Rothenburg ob der Tauber to najpiękniejsze miasteczko jakie miałam okazję zwiedzać w Niemczech. Niestety ciągle mam problem aby zapamiętać jego nazwę… Nawet Neuschwanstein brzmi dla mnie łatwiej. 😉
W Rothenburg ob der Tauber możecie być pewni, że Wasz aparat będzie intensywnie pracować. Każdy krok w starym mieście zachwyca.

Usually when we think about alcohol and Germany, it has to be beer. Well, it makes sense, majority of Germans drink beer, and famous Oktoberfest (beer festival) is held annually in Germany (Munich plus many other towns).

But Germans produce also lots of wine (especially white wine)! Germany is in the first 10 of largest wine-producing countries in the world. Thanks that, in some regions, you can find a scenery like from today’s picture. 🙂
So do you prefer wine of beer?

Myśląc o alkoholu spożywanym w Niemczech, na pierwszą myśl wysuwa się piwo. I nikogo nie dziwi, że większość Niemców pije piwo, a słynny Oktoberfest (festiwal piwa) odbywa się corocznie w Niemczech (przede wszystkim w Monachium, ale i w wielu innych miastach).

Jednak Niemcy produkują także spore ilości wina (głównie białego)! Niemcy znajdują w pierwszej dziesiątce krajów wytwarzających wino. Dzięki temu, niektóre niemieckie rejony obfitują w takie krajobrazy. 🙂
A Wy co bardziej lubicie, piwo czy wino?

Dresden and Leipzig are the most touristic places in the Free State of Saxony. There are many more historical towns or beautiful mountains, but they are not so known for foreigners, at least not yet…

I’ll not show you them this month, other time in future. Just be aware, that in Germany there are thousands lovely towns, so don’t focus only on visiting the main attractions, but always visit smaller towns. I find them much more charming than big cities. 🙂

This picture was taken at the front of the Moritzburg Castle, nearby Dresden. Maybe I should show you this nice castle, but horses wearing pink “hats” stole my heart. 😀

Drezno i Lipsk to najpopularniejsze miasta w Saksonii. Jednak to nie koniec turystycznych atrakcji! W Saksonii również zajdziecie wiele uroczych miasteczek i piękne góry – te miejsca nie są jeszcze aż tak bardzo popularne, więc tym bardziej warto je odwiedzić. 🙂

W tym miesiącu nie pokażę Wam więcej zdjęć z Saksonii, ale kiedyś to nadrobię!
Dziś nie mogłam sobie odpuścić aby nie umieścić tego zdjęcia. Zostało ono zrobione przed Pałacem Moritzburg, tuż pod Dreznem. Wiem, pałacu nie widać, ale konie w różowych czapeczkach skradły moje serce. 😀

Dresden is a beautiful city located in the Free State of Saxony (German: Freistaat Sachsen), nearby Poland and the Czech Republic.

During the Second World War the inner city of Dresden was largely destroyed by bombing by the Royal Air Force (RAF) and the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF). Many building were reconstructed, but there are still some works going on.

In Dresden you’ll find many lovely and interesting sites so no wonder it was listed as the UNESCO World Heritage Site. However in 2009 the city lost its UNESCO status, because of the construction of a highway bridge within 2 km of the historic center…

Drezno to piękne miasto leżące w Saksonii, całkiem blisko Czech i Polski.

Podczas II wojny światowej stare miasto zostało w znacznej części zbombardowane. Wiele budynków udało się zrekonstruować i odnowić; obecnie miasto prezentuje się wyjątkowo pięknie. Jednak minie jeszcze sporo czasu, zanim wszelkie rusztowania znikną z Drezna, ale nie przeszkadza to aż tak bardzo w zwiedzaniu.

Drezno zostało wpisane na Listę Światowego Dziedzictwa UNESCO, jednak w 2009 roku zostało z niej usunięte. Przyczyną tej wyjątkowej sytuacji było wybudowanie mostu w pobliżu starego miasta. Nie pasował do historycznego wyglądu miasta…

As an astrophysicist, I have to mention Effelsberg while showing you interesting places in Germany. 🙂 It’s the name of a village and a huge radio telescope that you see on today’s photo. You don’t have to be a scientist, everyone can go there to see the radio telescope.

There are no people on my photo, so it may be a bit difficult to guess the size of the telescope. Do you know how big it is?

The Effelsberg radio telescope belongs to the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn.
It was constructed from 1968 to 1971 and inaugurated in 1972.
It’s dish has a diameter of 100 m! 🙂

Jako astrofizyk muszę wspomnieć o Effelsberg, przy okazji postów na temat niemieckich atrakcji turystycznych. 🙂 Effelsberg to nazwa miasteczka a także ogromnego radioteleskopu, który dzisiaj pokazuję na zdjęciu. Każdy może się tam wybrać aby zobaczyć radioteleskop.

Na zdjęciu nie ma żadnych ludzi, więc dość trudno ocenić skalę, ale może wiecie jak duży jest radioteleskop?

Radioteleskop Effelsberg należy do Instytutu Maxa Plancka w Bonn.
Budowano go w latach 1968 – 1971.
Jego czasza ma średnicę 100 m! 🙂
