Traveling Rockhopper

This picture was taken on a misty day in Meppel, in February.

It’s one of the faces of Dutch winter.

Usually the temperatures are not very low, and you don’t see snow so often; luckily “not so often” because then the country is paralyzed…
But, because of the high humidity and strong wind, sometimes you may have the impression of much lower temperatures.

There is something more, that Dutch people are famous for – it’s ice skating. When the canals are frozen, people go outside and skate on them. 🙂 There are even competitions in ice skating! I found it very interesting.

W Holandii śnieg nie pada zbyt często, i całe szczęście bo wtedy kraj jest sparaliżowany… (coś w stylu jak “zima w grudniu zaskakuje drogowców w Polsce”). 😉

Jednak wysoka wilgotność i silny wiatr wywołują wrażenie dużo niższych temperatur; stąd polskie -30C może być “cieplejsze” niż niż holenderskie -5C.

Jest jednak coś specjalnego w holenderskiej zimie! Gdy temperatura utrzymuje się poniżej 0C, kanały zamarzają i Holendrzy używają ich do jazdy na łyżwach. Są nawet specjalne wyścigi po zamarzniętych kanałach! Czyż nie brzmi to ciekawie?

Autumn in the Netherlands can be very cold, rainy, and windy; and it’s not unlikely to have three seasons in one day…

But when it’s sunny, just go for a walk and enjoy colorful trees. 🙂

Jesień w Holandii może być zimna, deszczowa i wietrzna… i bardzo często można doświadczyć 3 pór roku w ciągu jednego dnia…

Jednak słoneczny dzień jest piękny i warto się wybrać na spacer po parku i podziwiać kolorowe liście.

Summer in the Netherlands is also full of flowers. That’s the best time to visit Friesian Islands and enjoy cycling.

Lato w Holandii też kojarzy się z kwiatami. To najlepszy okres na rowerową wycieczkę po jednej z wysepek na Morzu Północnym.

What’s your favorite season? I like a bit of everything, but spring is my favorite. 🙂 I love when trees blossom, everything is getting green, and ducks or geese have their cute chicks.

Of course, it often rains in the Netherlands, but it’s how it is…

Jaką jest Wasza ulubiona pora roku? Ja lubię po trochu każdą, ale wiosna jest najlepsza. 🙂 Uwielbiam iść na spacer gdy kwitną drzewa, trawa się zazieleniła, a kaczki i gęsi mają pisklaki. Mam taki sielski holenderski obrazek w pamięci. 🙂

Oczywiście, wiosną w Holandii często pada deszcz, ale co zrobić…

In Dutch cities, you can also find lots of modern art and buildings of contemporary architecture.

Honestly, it’s not my favorite art and architecture, and I’m not a big fan of these crazy building, but somehow, I started to like them. My eyes are still not really pleased by seeing them, but it’s good that architects play with their ideas and projects. It also makes the country more unique.

Holandia także słynie ze sztuki współczesnej i nowoczesnych budynków. Nie jest to moja ulubiona dziedzina i moje oczy nie są bardzo zadowolone z widoku tych budynków, ale muszę przyznać, że to ma swój “urok” i wyróżnia Holandię na tle innych państw. Nowoczesne budynki nie są typowymi “wieżowcami” ze szkła i betonu, często mają nietypowe kształty i kolory. I wyglądają jakby architekci bawili się swoimi pomysłami i projektami.

A to kolejny mały zamek (zwany Menkemaborg) w dużym ogrodem w miejscowości Uithuizen. Co sądzicie o tych oknach i okiennicach?

Today’s photo is another example of Dutch doors and windows. Everywhere in the Netherlands, you can see plenty of nice windows and doors, often with cats sitting nearby. 😉

Na dzisiejszym zdjęciu kolejny przykład okien i drzwi. To bardzo typowy widok – urocze okna, dookoła kwiaty i często kociak siedzący na oknie lub schodach. 🙂

Today you can see another not the most representative picture from a capital. Amsterdam has a lot to offer, unfortunately it’s very crowded, so I always try to encourage people to visit something more in the Netherlands than only Amsterdam.

As some of you may remember, I like taking pictures of doors and windows, so in this photo you see an old, nicely decorated entrance.

Dzisiaj widzicie zdjęcie stolicy – Amsterdam w nietypowym wydaniu. Ale może pamiętacie, że lubię fotografować okna i drzwi, stąd takie zdjęcie. Może jest nietypowe jak na zdjęcie Amsterdamu, ale jest ono bardzo “typowe” jak na holenderskie warunki. 😉 W Holandii znajdziecie mnóstwo uroczych domów z cegły, a one często maja śliczne drzwi i okna.

Gouda it’s a lovely town in the Netherlands, and the name of famous cheese. I’m guessing if you try to pronounce this name correctly, almost nobody understands you. 😉

(Dutch “G” – is like strong “H”, “ou” say like “au”)

Gouda, to nie tylko nazwa popularnego sera, ale także miasta w Holandii.

Wiecie jak się wymawia słowo “Gouda” po holendersku? Dla polaków to brzmi zabawnie, bo jest to “hałda”… Powiedzcie następnym razem w sklepie, że chcecie 100g hałdy, hihi… 😀

Today, you can see another picture from the cheese market in Alkmaar. When I went there it was raining (what a surprise… 😉 ), but I was still enjoying it. Alkmaar is also one of the nice Dutch towns, so when you go there, spend some time walking around.

Dzisiaj kolejne zdjęcie z targu serowego w Alkmaar. Kiedy tam byłam, oczywiście padał deszcz, ale i tak uważam że to jedna z najlepszych atrakcji holenderskich! Poza tym Alkmaar jest typowym holenderskim miasteczkiem, po którym warto pospacerować, np. z kawałkiem sera w ręce. 😉

There are 5 places with traditional Dutch cheese markets: Alkmaar, Gouda, Edam, Hoorn, and Woerden. It’s a gorgeous experience to visit one of them. It’s a big event, with presenting cheese, weighting, and carrying it, and of course you can try or buy cheese! Maybe it doesn’t sound special, but you just have to see it, and you change your mind. 🙂

Holandia słynie z sera i nie bez powodu! 🙂 Do tego, w pięciu miastach odbywają się “targi serowe”, są to: Alkmaar, Gouda, Edam, Hoorn, i Woerden. Taki targ to bardzo ciekawa impreza, na której można zobaczyć jak się sprawdza sery, waży, dźwiga itp. Oczywiście można też posmakować i kupić pyszny ser!

Schiermonnikoog, it’s an another “difficult” name of the Frisian Island. 🙂 Yeah, the Dutch language is not the easiest to pronounce correctly, but if you learn some basics, you’ll find it’s kind of cute. 🙂

Schiermonnikoog, to kolejna “skomplikowana” nazwa Fryzyjskiej wyspy. 🙂 Cóż, język holenderski (a raczej jego wymowa) do najprostszych nie należy. Jednak wiele osób potwierdza, że po nauczeniu się podstaw holenderskiego, język wydaje się dość uroczy.

Terschelling, it’s the name of one of the West Frisian Islands. It’s anther lovely island, that you can easily discover by bike. Well, basically each place in the Netherlands can be easily visited by bike.

Terschelling to nazwa jednej z Fryzyjskich Wysp. To kolejne urocze miejsce, które łatwo zwiedzić na rowerze. Właściwie, to każde miejsce w Holandii łatwo zwiedzić na dwóch kółkach.

I guess, when you plan your trip to the Netherlands, you don’t really think about swimming in the sea. Well, it’s possible but the water of the North Sea is not the warmest one. 😉
It doesn’t mean, it’s not worthy to go to the coast! There are many lovely places and large, sandy beaches, and you can often meet cute oystercatchers (Do you remember them from my previous pictures – Galapagos 29th of May 2015, Falklands 15th of April 2015)!

Wydaje mi się, że mało kto planując wycieczkę do Holandii, rozważa możliwość popływania w morzu. Morze Północne do najcieplejszych nie należy, ale ma wiele uroku. Poza tym często można spotkać zabawne ostrygojady, pamiętacie je z moich wcześniejszych zdjęć – Galapagos 29 maj 2015, Falklandy 15 kwiecień 2015?

Five of Dutch Islands are accesible by ferries. On the 8th of August you saw one picture from Texel, the other islands are called: Vlieland, Terschelling, Schiermonnikoog, and Ameland that is on today’s photo.

I visited all of them. Each island is very nice, however I prefer the smaller ones.

Na 5 wysepek holenderskich można łatwo się dostać promem. 8 sierpnia, pokazałam Wam zdjęcie z wyspy Texel, a dzisiaj wyspa Ameland. Pozstałe 3 to: Vlieland, Terschelling, Schiermonnikoog.

Udało mi się odwiedzić te wszystkie wysepki i każda z nich jest urocza, choć najbardziej mi się podobały te mniejsze, na które nie można dopłynąć z własnym autem.

As I’ve mentioned before, it’s very likely to see many cats on Dutch streets. This super cute kitty was my favorite neighbor, we called her “Drama Queen”. 🙂 Isn’t she pretty as a queen?

p.s. Her voice is a bit squeaky, so “Drama” comes from her funny meowing… 😉

Jak już wcześniej wspomniałam, bardzo łatwo jest spotkać urocze kociaki na holenderskich ulicach. Kicia ze zdjęcia była moją ulubioną sąsiadką. Zawsze do mnie podbiegała miaucząc i prosząc o głaskanie.

Spotykałyśmy się prawie za każdym razem w drodze po zakupy, więc zaczęłam zawsze zabierać ze sobą aparat fotograficzny. 🙂 Kicia ma setki zdjęć… 😀

At the coast or on islands it’s likely to encounter a seal. Sometimes they need help. If so, they’re taken to the Seal Rehabilitation and Research Centre in Pieterburen. It’s a nice place to visit, to learn about seals and to observe these cute animals.

This picture was taken through the glass of the pool with seals. They’re swimming to the glass and observing people, or we’re observing them. 😉

Foki także można spotkać w Holandii, a szczególnie w Fokarium Pieterburen. Gdy znaleziona na plaży foka potrzebuje pomocy, to jest zabierana do Pieterburen. Po wyleczeniu jest ona wypuszczane do morza. To podobny ośrodek, jak u nas w Helu, ale w Pieterburen nie ma fok, które na stałe tam mieszkają.

To zdjęcie zostało zrobione przez szybę jednego z dużych basenów. Foki podpływały do szyby i przyglądały się ludziom, a my im. 🙂

The Netherlands is a highly populated European country, but it’s still easy to find there many green fields. And where is grass, you will find animals – mostly cows, horses, and sheep. While going by train, I was often wondering, are there more cows or horses. I guess, there are more cows, but it’s not so obvious!

W Holandii, mimo iż to tak bardzo zaludniony kraj, można znaleźć wiele zielonej przestrzeni. Niekoniecznie lasy, ale dużo łąk. A tam gdzie jest trawa są często zwierzaki – przede wszystkim krowy, owce i konie. Często podczas jazdy pociągiem, zastanawiałam się czy jest tam więcej krów czy koni – pewnie jest więcej krów, ale to wcale nie takie oczywiste!

Today’s picture presents another Dutch castle. This one is located at the Dutch-German boarder and it’s called Huis Bergh. It’s also a nice castle. I think it’s a bit smaller and less touristic than Kasteel de Haar.

Dzisiaj widzimy kolejny zamek, nazywa się Huis Bergh. Znajduje się on tuż przy granicy holendersko-niemieckiej. To także urocze miejsce, a zamek jest chyba trochę mniejszy od Kasteel de Haar i zagląda do niego mniej turystów.
